LNMF!

Latest Information.

The Lynn North memorial fund has been launched to build a ‘Residential Child Education Centre’ near Bidar in Karnataka, Southern India. The fund is in memory of Lynn North a member of Olton Friary parish who died tragically in November 2005.

Why the Fund?

Bidar is a very poor area of India about 80 miles from Hyderabad. Because of the grinding poverty in Bidar, children’s education suffers as children are required to work in the fields and are often not sent to school at all. Only a very few reach the equivalent of GCSE. A mission was established at Bidar to assist socio-economically disadvantaged people regardless of Caste or Religion, to move towards self reliance. This is achieved through adult education, self help groups, employment schemes and child education. The mission tries to serve the spiritual, social & economic needs of all the people.

A school was established at Bidar but sadly the resources available are not enough to educate all the children especially those from remote districts. So it was decided that building a Residential Child Education Centre would allow children from those areas to stay at the school and receive some primary education in the hope that it could lead to secondary education. We aim to fund a new boarding centre at Hulsoor a poor village in Bidar district.

An Evening with Liz & Simon

Elizabeth and I have been involved with the Friary church community for some time.

Our most significant contributions to the Parish have been musical, which has allowed us to see the appreciation that people have for the music they hear, whether this be at mass, a carol concert or a charity evening. It was this that prompted the two of us to host three concerts to help raise money for the Lynn North Memorial Fund, one in 2006 and two in 2007.

The concert evenings provided the audience with live musical entertainment from Elizabeth, myself and other friends, along with a buffet meal. All involved with the fund knew that the Parish and the wider community would give the strong support that was needed.

Fortunately for us, we were proved right. All three concerts were extremely successful thanks to a tremendous amount of help from so many who organized, cooked, served food, performed and came as guests. Such a genuine display of generosity was a reminder to us of people’s willingness to help and support a good cause.

Our parish provides for a very diverse range of parishioners with a children's Mass, a sung Mass and a youth Mass. Our active parish has many groups and activities catering for a wide variety of needs such as the SVP, CWL, a Justice and Peace Outreach group and three choirs to name but a few. In 2004 the parish hall was refurbished, with the addition of a unit for the disabled.
